Phrase(s) of the Day (UPDATED)
“Heard” first at Froggy’s place (paraphrased): “Dick Durbin, the Jane Fonda of the US Senate.”
The senator needs to go. Yes, I think a blogswarm is in order.
UPDATE: Investor's Business Daily
The only kind thing that can be said about Dick Durbin's rant this week on the Senate floor, as hearings on alleged prisoner abuses at Guantanamo began, is that it made Howard Dean look sane.
UPDATE: I wrote to Senators Boxer and Feinstein asking them to censure their colleague. Hey, it can't hurt. We'll see what comes of it.
UPDATE: No apology from the senator. Some weasel words, however:
Defending himself, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat [Durbin] said Thursday it was "just plain wrong" to say he was diminishing past horrors.Contact Senator DurbinHe said he was comparing interrogation techniques that the
FBI report said were used at Guantanamo with those in foreign detainee camps."This is the type of thing you would expect from a repressive regime. This is not the type of thing you would expect from the United States," Durbin said.
Durbin made the comparison after reading an FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in Guantanamo Bay as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings," Durbin said Tuesday.
Sens. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., pointing out that millions of people died in the camps that Durbin cited, while no one has died at Guantanamo.

The fool from Amnesty International who called Gitmo a gulag, this invalidating the gulag status that is the rest of the island of Cuba openly said that he used the G word to get a spot on a talking head show for visibility of The Cause(TM).
Durbin's doing the same thing. He needs visability so he dramaqueens his way into the news. Beats passing sound legislation for his constituents, don't it?

I emailed the Senator. I edited for language. I suggested that he run for President with Jane Fonda as his running mate. I gave my correct name and City.
Some staffer may read it and will surely delete it. I'll be just another ping off of the armor but I feel just a tiny bit better.
Remembering that he isn't my senator makes me feel better too until I remember that I've got "crying" George Voinovich and Mike DeWhine representing me in that "august" body.
Then I realize it could be worse: Kennedy; Boxer; Hatch; Shrillary.... How depressing!
