Silly Season
Only a racist would automatically think of race *whenever* monkeys are mentioned.
Oh, and Glenn Reynolds is somehow racist, akin to the KKK, for celebrating a certain kind of diversity. To that, I say, celebrate diversity:

(Thanks to Oleg Volk and The Mulatto Advocate for the .gif times two)
UPDATE: Thank the moonbats for inspiring (arguably) high comedy. Poker is a bigoted game also, or so says Laurence Simon in John Hawkin's comments on this subject: "Don't forget that poker is also evil according to liberals because it takes four queens to beat a straight."
UPDATE (July 18, 2007): I noticed that there are new links coming to this three-year-old post; therefore I fixed outdated links, where possible. Welcome.

I don't get the whole "monkey flap thing". OK, so I'm white and I can't get down, but "monkey" has always been a term of endearment in our family. So could it be that racism, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder? Color me sheltered! I'm clueless.

OK, so I'm white and I can't get down
I guess that all depends on who's asking. :-)
Unless a statement specifically likens monkeys to black people, a person that automatically thinks/cries "racism" whenever the word "monkey" is mentioned has his/her own personally racism issues with which to deal.

I love the ad, it's great. Should be plastered all over billboards in Chicago.

Just as an interesting historical note, Howard Cosell's career was nearly torpedoed when he said "Look at that little monkey run!" (or words to that effect) in reference to a black player. But fortunately for him, upon further investigation it turned out that he had used "monkey" to describe nimble white players too.

the whole monkey thing is a comic bit that Frank J at IMAO does. he has this monkey fixation. and a space laser fixation. oh, yeah, and a puppie in a blender fixation, though he blames that one on Instapundit.

Thanks, Juliette. This gif is the most intelligent contribution to the (usually inane) guns/racism discussion that I have seen. It is far, far more intelligent than anything on the Eschaton comment thread.
By the way, I recall that some time ago George Bush nominated a judge who had testified against the KKK in Mississippi in the 1960's. (I forget his name and I have had a couple glasses of wine, so this comment will be a bit foggy.) Of course, all of the liberal lobbying groups came out against him. I remember that a prominent Mississippian, I believe it was the relative of a civil rights leader but I am not sure, said something to the effect of "down here the only people opposing the judge are the NAACP and the KKK."

I thought Cosell did actually lose his job over that remark. Was I mistaken?

Doug:
You may be thinking of Jimmy the Greek, who said: "The black is the better athlete, and he practices to be the better athlete, and he's bred to be the better athlete because this goes way back to the slave period. The slave owner would breed this big black with this big black woman so he could have a big black kid. That's where it all started." And got fired for it.
Posted by: baldilocks | August 05, 2004 at 10:43 PM
When someone says monkey...I think of monkeys.
Spider monkeys to be exact.
Posted by: mark | August 05, 2004 at 11:13 PM
Not only was Jimmy the Greek fired but if you remember he had to go groveling, almost literally on his hands and knees, to Jesse Jackson.
One of the most pathetic, humiliating images ever seen on TV.
And on a minor note, remember how he pronounced "athlete"? He kept saying "ath - uh - lete". I don't know why but for some reason that's always stayed with me.

The gun control loonies up here in the SF Bay Area pitched a hissy over "Saturday Night specials" a while back. Their entire rational for banning them was that they were cheap and easy to use. Doh.
So the do-gooders have forced gun ownership underground in the poorer areas of the city.
Good move asshats.

AvgJoe: You're thinking of Judge Charles Pickering; he was defended against charges of racism by (among others) Charles Evers, bother the late Medgar Evers.

The left is starting to remind me of tree frogs. Very loud voice, very little informational content, but the other tree frogs respond to it just as loudly, starting a racket that lasts all night.
End result (unintended by the tree frogs) you're so tired the next day you accidentally run your car into the tree, catching it on fire, and the frog habitat burns down.
The frogs, of course, see no connection between their bloviating and the burning of the tree.
I suppose there's a metphor there somewhere I'm trying to get out, but those damn tree frogs just won't shut up.
Ribbit.

The last time I heard 'monkey' used as a racist term was in Thailand, where some Thais use it to describe hairy foreigners (especially men with hairy chests). It was derision based on 'furriness', not skin color.

Cosell was commenting on the Redskins' Alvin Garrett in a 1983 Monday night game.
Cosell did not, technically, lose his job over the remark, but the attendant furor, combined with his general disillusionment about boxing and a worsening heart condition, caused Cosell to leave ABC in 1985.

Juliette, I just got my "Diversity" shirt this week, and I'm taking it with me to Moonbat Central up north next week (not all the way to Berkley, but in Santa Cruz I guess you're close enough that the fumes can still rot your brain). Not sure if I'll wear it or not, but wanted to show it to a cop friend near Monterey. I would just laugh if someone called me a racist for it, as I know I'm not, and that's all that matters. It's akin to calling Bush a fascist; they are diluting the meaning of the word when applied to *real* racists.
Posted by: hindmost | August 06, 2004 at 07:10 AM
They are just are upset because the guns they like and are familiar with are not on the T-shirt. They never heard of Ruger, and Kimber...a girlie-name gun? Further to the left, The Animal-rights 'bats see ill-treatment in Colt's rampant stallion.
They would be happier with a t-shirt displaying an Albanian SKS next to a an Egyptian Hakim, a Chinese AK47 and a Soviet Tokarev SVT-40 - or the ultimate symbol of their Solidarity, an RPG.
The French are especially upset because their MAS-36 and Châtellerault FM 24-29 are missing - not to mention their beloved Chauchat (possibly the worst-ever gun designed).

And I came to the conclusion yesterday that unicorns are racist too. Just think about it. Uh huh!
Posted by: Ith | August 06, 2004 at 08:53 AM
Cool pics, but does that sista really want to take on the Klan with that unwieldy, five-round, bolt-action Moisin-Nagant? How about a nice pistol-caliber carbine with pre-ban mags, like the Beretta Storm - light, controllable, short enough for the car and more precise than a pistol.

Posted by: baldilocks | August 06, 2004 at 09:52 AM
Y'know, this isn't the first time this sort of thing has come up- there were some idiots complaining about racism in the Lord of the Ring movie, too.
Jonah Goldberg nailed it-
One is tempted to ask who is the real racist here? On the one hand we have people — like me — who see horrific, flesh-eating, dull-witted creatures with jagged feral teeth, venomous mouths, pointed devilish ears, and reptilian skin, and say, "Cool, Orcs!" On the other hand we have people, like Mr. Yatt, who see the same repugnant creatures and righteously exclaim "black people!" Maybe he should spend less time vetting movies for signs of racism and more time vetting himself if, that is, he free-associates black people with these subhuman monsters.
IMO, the twits over at Atrios' site are doing something very similar if they're free associating guns + minorities = "let's have a pogrom".
Posted by: rosignol | August 06, 2004 at 09:59 AM
Rosignol, it wasn't just LOTR. They called "The Lion King" racist because two of the three hyenas were minorities (Whoopie Goldberg and Cheech Marin, possibly even the third one, I don't remember who did the voice).
And thanks again for posting the graphics!
Posted by: Ken Summers | August 06, 2004 at 10:16 AM
Um, that thanks was for Juliet.
I looked up Lion King, the third hyena was Jim Cummings - I know nothing about him. But the movie also had James Earl Jones and Robert Guillaume as non-hyenas.

Hmmm this reminds me of the Sir Mixalot song "No Holds Barred"
lines include:
Hypothetical situation
Gun control starts sweepin the nation
Now you got a bunch of unarmed innocent victims
Gettin FUCKED by the system
Sittin at home with a butter knife, huh
Any fool could rape your wife
So what's up when the criminals can't be stopped?
The only one with guns are the COPS
But it's hard for a brother to trust police
Huh, so the shit don't cease
So I go downtown to buy a hot gun
I hated criminals, and now I'm one
Because I bought a gat to protect my house
The cops wanna bust me out?
So it's illegal to protect yourself?
Hell, you either get killed, or you in jail
So when you vote
You better think about what I just wrote
And F*** writin a note to yo' Congressman!
You got the fool hired
Now help get the fool fired
A scary scenario
And I put it in your stereo
So when a fool tries to run up on my car
R.I.P., no holds barred

When I was over in Korea, any particularly hairy G.I. (such as myself) was likely, at one point or another, to be accosted by Korean children; they would tug at the arm-hairs and spout the only english they knew: "Mister Monkey!"
And yes, I'm so white I'm the model they used for the color="#ffffff" tag in HTML.

I think the current contretemps will force the Moonbat Brigade to cease using the following words in any discourse:
Chimp
Chimpy
McChimp
Chimpster
Chimp-in-Chief
Smirky McChimpster
Chimpy McSmirkster
Yeah, right…
BTW, am I missing any henceforth prohibited appelations for President Bush?

Love the pic of the armed black woman, but she should be holding a Winchester 1866 or a Henry, not a Russkie rifle that didn't come along until decades later. Better still, a Colt revolver would be nice.
Posted by: George L. | August 06, 2004 at 04:38 PM
Yes, there is, has been, and, unfortunately, will be racism.
Sometimes it's easy to spot, other times it's hard to be sure: Did that young woman deny my request for gas because she was closing the gas station or was it because of my/her race?
In his rant this "race policeman" brings up the colors on a shirt that his subject/victim isn't even wearing and claiming certain colors to be the exclusive properly of 'pan Africa'. That's going pretty far afield, in my opinion.
I don't know what this "race policeman" looks like, so I'll just suggest that since he can't find a racist under his bed he might try looking atop the bed or in the mirror.
Rereading this I guess it's sort of what has been said before, but I've got some time in it now and I'm going to post anyway. ;-)

I really am racist! It's true! Why won't anyone believe me?
Posted by: Frank J. | August 06, 2004 at 06:34 PM
Of course you're a racist Frank. The modern definition of the word is anyone winning an argument with a liberal.
Posted by: Peter | August 06, 2004 at 07:23 PM
There, there, Frank. We know you're trying to be a racist but... when you portray Condi Rice as a super-hot Machiavellian brainiac, it's obvious that you fail to grasp the basics of racial stereotyping (see Rall, Ted).
However, your Nuke the Moon T-shirt is clearly anti-gay.
Posted by: Lyle | August 06, 2004 at 07:31 PM
Frank is a filthy liar. He is not Atrios. And he is not a racist. he is, however, a filthy monkey-hugging liberal.

I think chess is a racist game. It pits all black pieces against all white pieces. It discriminates too! Notice how the WHITE piece ALWAYS gets to go FIRST ! If that ain`t racist I don`t know what is.
I live in the liberal stronghold of Florida. No, not West Palm, but Key West. They have Gay Pride, Womyns Fest and Celebrate Diversity events constantly. At any one of these events just about any and every liberal cause is allowed to represent themselves and if you want to express an opposing cause, you`re out of luck.
Diversity is fine, as long as it conforms to their ideology.
I have a Celebrate Diversity shirt I also have a NO MA'AM (National Orginization of Men Against Amazonian Masterhood) shirt and if I have to go downtown during one of these events I`ll wear one of those shirts.
The Celebrate Diversity shirt is good for all liberal causes. The NO MA'AM shirt only works well during the Feminazi events.
I get a kick out of giving their cause a poke in the eye.
Am I a bad person? Maybe, but it does seem to be a good way to relieve some political stress.
The expressions on some of those peoples faces is priceless.

I think mix is mostly producing these days, I don't know exactly what he's up to. He doesn't seem to harbor a great deal of trust for politicians or white folks in general, I doubt he'd work with any major political party. Just a guess though.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor | August 07, 2004 at 09:38 PM
joatmoaf is right: CHESS IS RACIST
Chess, that racist game, will be getting a makeover if Bill Ware gets his way.
"By saying that white automatically is offensive, it states that white is better than black," Ware said. Ware plans on removing color superiority by allowing the pieces to either be the same or different colors such as red, blue, green, etc. The determining factor on who moves first depends on what square the queen sits on.
"My goal is to not only help students improve their algebra skills, but to also take what they have learned and teach others through community volunteerism," Ware said. Just like Moses, Ware said he wants the students he helps to teach the skills they learned to others. He also wants to eliminate the stereotype that if you’re white you’re right and if you’re black, step back.
Actually I thought that last was rather catchy...

One thing I've never understood about the Leftist propaganda. How can they simultaneously believe the following two things?
1) Bush and the neocons are turning this country into a Fascist state.
2) Citizens should not own guns.

Cassandra:
"He also wants to eliminate the stereotype that if you’re white you’re right and if you’re black, step back.

It is. It's also a paraphrase of a very old aphorism.
